Choosing after-school activities

After-school activities can build skills and friendships. Too many can leave a child tired and short of free time.

Ask the child

Children are more likely to stick with something they chose. Let them try a taster session before committing to a full term.

Keep some free time

Unstructured time, for play, reading or doing nothing in particular, matters too. One or two regular activities is plenty for many primary-age children.

Practical questions

  • Who runs the activity, and what checks have the adults had?
  • What does it cost per term, including kit and trips?
  • How will your child get there and back?
  • What happens if your child wants to stop?

School clubs

Many schools run clubs at lunchtime or after school, sometimes free or low-cost. Ask the school office for a list.
