Planning for university: a timeline for families

University applications can seem a long way off, but some decisions made earlier affect the options later.

Around age 14 to 16

Subject choices start to matter. Some university courses expect particular school subjects, such as mathematics for engineering. If your child has a course in mind, check typical entry requirements before they drop a subject.

Around age 16 to 17

Start researching courses and places. Open days, online talks and course pages all help. Encourage your child to look at what students study each year, not only the course title.

Studying abroad

Some families consider universities in other countries. Entry rules, costs and application timelines differ a lot. It helps to compare two or three countries on the same few points: tuition, length of degree, application deadlines and the cost of living. A side-by-side university comparison can save some of that legwork.

The final year

Applications, personal statements and entrance tests take time. Help your child make a calendar of deadlines early in the year.

Let them lead

The choice is your child's. Your role is to help them find good information and to talk through the options.
